چکیده

A global, time-dependent, threedimensional, coupled ionosphere-thermosphere model is used to predict the spatial distribution of non-thermal plasma in the F-layer. It is shown that, even for steady-state conditions with Kp as low as 3, the difference between the ion and neutral velocities often exceeds the neutral thermal speed by a factor, D', which can be as large as 4. Theoretically, highly non-Maxwellian, and probably toroidal, ion velocity distributions are expected when D' exceeds about 1.5. The lack of response of the neutral winds to sunward ion drifts in the dawn sector of the auroral oval cause this to be the region most likely to contain toroidal distributions. The maximum in D' is found in the throat region of the convection pattern, where the strong neutral winds of the afternoon sector meet the eastward ion flows of the morning sector. These predictions are of interest, not only to radar scientists searching for non-thermal ionospheric plasma, but also as one possible explanation of the initial heating and upward flows of ions in the cleft ion fountain and nightside auroral oval, both of which are a major source of plasma for the magnetosphere.

The influence of anisotropic F region ion velocity distributions on ionospheric ion outflows into the magnetosphere

The contribution to the fieldionospheric F region and sources of the heavy ions aligned ionospheric ion momentum equation, due to which are accelerated to several electron volts at coupling between pressure anisotropy and the greater altitudes and subsequently flow from the inhomogeneous geomagnetic field, is investigated. ionosphere into the magnetosphere. Occurrence statistics of cold, streaming ions in the near-Earth magnetotail: Survey of Polar-TIDE observations

[1] Results are presented from a survey of cold ion observations in the near-Earth magnetotail using data from the Polar Thermal Ion Dynamics Experiment (TIDE). During the interval from July to December of 2001, Polar had its apogee ( 9.5 RE) near the equatorial plane in the tail region of the magnetosphere. It is shown that a lobal wind is ubiquitous in the inner tail, with low-energy (<300 eV...

First mesospheric in-situ measurement in Iran using sounding rockets and plasma impedance probe (PIP)

This paper reports on the progress for the first development of rocket probe for in-situ measurement of ionospheric plasma parameters in Iran. The designed probe known as Plasma Impedance Probe (PIP) will be used to measure the electron density, electron-neutral collision frequency, background magnetic field, and temperature in the mesospheric and in the altitude range of 70 km to 150 km. This ...

Modeling ionospheric outflows and their impact on the magnetosphere, initial results

[1] Ionospheric outflow has been shown to be a significant contributor to the plasma population of the magnetosphere during active geomagnetic conditions. We present the results of new efforts to model the source and effects of out-flowing plasma in the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF). In particular, we develop and use the Polar Wind Outflow Model (PWOM), a field-aligned, multifluid, mu...

Ion energization in Ganymede’s magnetosphere: Using multifluid simulations to interpret ion energy spectrograms

[1] We investigate the ion population and energy distribution within Ganymede’s magnetosphere by examining Ganymede’s ionospheric outflow as a source of heavy (O) and light (H) ions and the Jovian magnetospheric plasma as an external source of heavy ions. We develop a method for examining the energy distributions of each ion species in a three-dimensional multifluid simulation in a way directly...
